Berkley-Pendell Piano Scholarship Competition
Berkley-Pendell Piano Scholarship Competition

The purpose of the Berkley-Pendell Scholarship Fund is to encourage and promote the cause of great music, and via its sponsorship of this annual competition, to foster emerging pianistic artistry and youth.  The participating chapters jointly sponsor the annual piano competition for students whose teachers are active members of the participating chapters.  The winners of each division are awarded cash prizes, and invited to perform at a special concert, and receive additional honors and recognition.

In 1986, sister ISMTA chapters established the Berkley-Pendell Scholarship Fund in honor of the founding members of the original chapter, Helen Berkley of Winfield, IL, and Verona Pendell of West Chicago, IL.  Currently the following ISMTA chapters sponsor and participate in the Fund's activities:  Naperville, Salt Creek, Waubonsee, and West Suburban.

To be eligible for student Competition entries, a teacher must be an active member of MTNA, ISMTA, and of one the the Illinois Music Teachers Association. Eligibility is also dependent upon the teacher’s participation in chapter activities, which will be documented and submitted on the TEACHER ELIGIBILITY FORM document in sidebar at left.  NOTE: Teachers are required to assist at the competition, and will be assigned times and duties. Those teachers unable to be present will receive alternative and appropriate supportive activity, to be determined by the Director.

Students must be in grade 12 or lower of the current academic year.

A student must have studied for at least six months with the current teacher, who must be an active member of one of the Illinois Music Teachers Association. See the STUDENT ELIGIBILITY and REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS document in sidebar at left.
