Berkley-Pendell Piano Competition and Festival
Berkley-Pendell Piano Competition and Festival

The purpose of the scholarship fund, annual piano competition and newly offered festival is to promote the cause of great music and to foster emerging pianistic artistry and excellence.  The participating chapters jointly sponsor the competition and festival for students of active members, awarding honors, acknowledgment, and inclusion for performance in the Celebratory Concert. Competition winners are also awarded cash prizes. Judges will select the Festival-level performers of this celebratory concert.

In 1986, sister ISMTA chapters established the Berkley-Pendell Scholarship Fund in honor of Helen Berkley and Verona Pendell, founders of the original West Suburban chapter.  The Fund is currently supported by all western area chapters, including Naperville, Salt Creek, and Waubonsee.

To be eligible for student entries, a teacher must be a member of MTNA, ISMTA, and one of the West Suburban chapters. Eligibility is also dependent upon the teacher’s participation in chapter activities documented and submitted on the eligibility form. Due to the recent pandemic, the participation activity will be flexible. Entering students’ teachers will assist at the event, or provide alternative support activity. Refer to the TEACHER ELIGIBILITY FORM on the sidebar.

Students must be in grades 5 through 12 of the current academic year. An entering student must have studied for at least six months with the current teacher, who must be an active member of IMTA. Refer to the STUDENT ELIGIBILITY FORM on the sidebar.
